We woke up and decided to head toward White Sands National Monument. The wind was pretty stiff in the afternoon, and the sand was blowing pretty hard. We learned that the best time to visit is in October and November, as the winds have stopped, the weather is mild, and there is still a good chance of seeing (as opposed to being in) a thunderstorm. Also, every month there is a guided trip to Lake Lucero, and that sounds interesting. We did walk the short Big Dune Trail, as by then the winds had calmed a bit even though it was still a bit cool. On our next visit we’d like to hike the Alkali Flat Trail (this time it was way too windy and cold).

We looked at the map and decided to stay in Lordsburg NM so we could visit Chiricahua National Monument as we head toward the Grand Canyon. The hotel there had no internet access and there was not local AOL modem access either.
